My Name is Eve Guzman. I was featured in the January 2015 PEOPLE Magazine “Half Their Size Issue”. I lost half my body weight, 141 pounds.
My highest weight was 277 lbs. I had been overweight all my life. I toggled between a size 14 and 20 as a teenager . I was 20 and had a newborn daughter. I had gained 85 lbs during my pregnancy. I got to a size 24. I got tired of not being able to walk out of the fitting room with a pair of jeans. I became upset with myself and the way I looked and felt. I researched how to create a healthy weight loss meal plan for myself with low fat clean meals and healthy shakes. I bought a Taebo video and started working out in the privacy of my own home. I found creative ways to cook healthy foods and journaled everything I ate. Once I lost 40 lbs and got a little more confidence, I got a gym membership and started walking, running and working out on the elliptical machine. It took me about 16 months to lose the first 120 pounds. Six months after I lost the weight, I got pregnant with my second child. I gained 35 lbs with that pregnancy and lost all the weight in 4 months. Over the past 18 months, I started lifting weights and lost an additional 17 lbs and got down to 136 lbs. I have been maintain my weight ever since. PEOPLE magazine found me on social media and contacted me in September 2014 to be in the annual “Half Their Size Issue”. I become a sports nutritionist and Herbalife health coach. I coach people on macro based nutrition plans, Herbalife nutrition plans, cook weekly meals for clients and host online weight loss challenges to inspire people to lose weight. I love my job and life. I love showing people that my dream can be theirs. I am just a girl who went for it.
9 months ago I decided to change my life! I was overweight and miserable and has lost control of my body and my eating habits. I did a lot of research and immediately started to change my lifestyle. Since last year June I have managed to lose 45 lbs and 6 dress sizes. I love my high protein, low carb diet and exercise program. I still enjoy life but I make sure that I fuel my body with nutritious food and that I stay active. I almost gave up after one month because I didn’t see results but I am SO grateful that I kept going and stayed consistent I am so happy to have knowledge about my own body and what works for me. One of the biggest questions African American women have in regards to working out. How to tame our HAIR!!! We understand getting fit and have a fresh do are typically very hard. We have researched a few tips to help our lovely BWDWO ladies along the way.
- Use a dry shampoo. Prior to working out spray your scalp with a dry shampoo. This will help keep your scalp sweat from frizzing up your lovely tresses.
- Wrap your hair. Use a silk wrap to keep your hair taut and in place. After you have completed your workout wait until you have cooled down to unwrap your hair.
- If you are bold enough, workout in your rollers! Yep, rollers have enough pressure to keep your roots and ends from frizzing up.
- If you have a fresh do it is now a great time to strength train. Strength training allows you a great workout and you will lower your risk of sweating around your hairline.
- If you prefer straight hair, try a Brazilian blow out. Although they can be pricey, around $200, a Brazilian blowout is a keratin treatment that will leave your hair silky straight for about 3 months!
So those are our tips and tricks! Don’t let you your “do” hinder your workout progress! And just in case you haven’t thought about it, give natural hair a try. Not only are natural coils awesome but they are gym friendly!

The year of 2012 Border Line Diabetic, High Blood Pressure and sitting at 5’3 at 184lbs —was the MOST unhealthiest I had ever been in my LIFE
7 day cleanse and down 6lbs from it. I went from 3 days of 45 minutes on the elliptical to 6 days a week of doing 1 1/2 hrs of a combination during the week of Turbo Kickboxing, Body Combat, Nike Boot Camp Classes, running 3 times a week and incorporating weight lifting at least twice a week! I don’t like diets. So my meals consisted of eating better choices and smaller portions. Was I perfect? Nope, Did I cheat? Yep! I mean let’s be realistic. My eating consisted of no pork and I cut back on Salt and Sugar. After a year and a half and before I knew it I went from 184lbs/size 13 to 138lbs and wearing a size 9 by 2014. My blood pressure is now under control and I am no longer border line diabetic. I am truly blessed!
I am not where I want to be physically but I’m better and stronger then I was before July 1, 2012. My self-confidence and spirit has lifted tremendously . So I am now 31 years young and on a new journey of lifting more weights and eating more protein to obtain a more toned and fit body. I am also proud to say that I have recently been certified to be a TurboKick Instructor and now a Team Beach Body Online Coach to assist others with their weight-loss goals!
All in all if I don’t leave you with nothing else as you read about my journey, I do want to say this; THERE IS NO SECRET TO LOSING WEIGHT, JUST MAKE TIME FOR YOUR HEALTH. I waited until I had bad results at the doctor’s office to make a lifestyle change. Some people don’t get the warning before the end results of sickness or even death.
